Alamac Goes Postal! Below is an excerpt from an article in the February 18, 2007 edition of The Robesonian. The story is written by Roxana Ross, and the photo is by Steve Humbert.
The latest yarn at the post office is one you have to see rather than hear.
Every time you eye one of the new short-sleeved, knit shirts at post offices across the United States, consider that the uniform's fabric was made at Alamac American Knits in Lumberton.
Though the contract doesn't translate into more jobs at the plant, it's good news for the people working there, as well as local Postal Service workers who can take pride in the fact that their uniforms are not only American made, but locally produced.
"It's not necessarily more jobs, but it's more job security ...," said John Wishart, Alamac's director of employee benefits.
The fabric plant won the contract in September to turn the yarn into the cotton/polyester blend for the shirts. The fabric is shipped elsewhere and transformed into the shirts of mail carriers.
Ted Taylor, a sales and service associate at the post office in Lumberton, said he found out about the shirts' origins recently while waiting on an Alamac employee.
"It's not every day a local company supplies something as big as the post office," Taylor said. |
